The strong winds and high tides of StormEleanor have washed up more palm oil debris on the Sefton coast, with material removed from the beach to the north and south of Southport Pier this afternoon by ranger John Gramauskas.
Palm oil debris is harmless to humans, but can be fatal to dogs if eaten, and unfortunately its pungent smell is attractive to dogs, so they are drawn to it!
Dog owners are asked to remain vigilant along the Sefton coast while this material continues to wash ashore and to keep their pets under close control, especially along the tideline.
The material began washing ashore in volume at the beginning of November and it is quite possible the wild weather may push more onto the coast over the coming days.
It is being removed by rangers whenever they encounter it.
If you see small pieces of palm oil, it is safe to pick up (although you may wish to wear gloves) and place in waste bins - if you find larger blocks of the yellowy, waxy material, please notify the relevant landowner, depending on where you are on the coastline, to arrange removal.
